Mountains and Valleys

Church of Ireland Cross

Culcaigh CairnEver since our family moved to County Cavan I have wanted to get up Culcaigh. This is the highest hill on the Irish border that dominates many of our views. It is also the 5th highest in the country! I tried walking up it last March but turned back when the soles on both walking boots (that had not been used for a few years) unglued! Finally last week I managed to get to the top. It was a good stiff walk and very boggy. My lack of serious walking was very quickly obvious so it was a great relief to get to the top with a clear view.
I love the excitement and sense of achievement getting to a mountain top. In truth though it’s not a place you are often able to stay. Mountains are bare and exposed with little earth and many rocks. There is very little shelter and the threat of weather changing and darkness falling quickly keeps us on the move. Typically for this green pleasant land, heavy rain made for a very wet return to the car!
Culcaigh Trig point on top of cairnIn faith we often talk about mountaintop experiences. These are times when trusting in God is good. Trusting in God is joyful and wonderful and full of certainty.
Much of Christian life however is not like that. Let’s be honest, we are not often on the mountain top! Much of our lives are in the valley when life is full of questions, doubts and fears that we are working through.
Some of us may love the mountaintop but here’s a thought to think about for all of us on our journeys of faith. Farmers will know that mountaintops are not good places for growing. The real growth is in the valley!
As we have come to the end of our harvest services it was a joy to hear the stories of faith. It many ways many stories shared were moments in the valley. These were stories of fear, stories of disastrous days when despite everything God did something, stories of perseverance, stories of tragedy and pain. It was so moving in our final service to hear our Bishop speak so openly of the pain of his early years losing both parents, yet God still there in the midst of those troubled times.
Culcaigh looking from the northThose simple stories of faith from speakers of all different backgrounds remind us that God uses the difficult times and ordinary people like you and I. We don’t have to be anyone special. We do have to be available and open to God using us.
Reflecting on this harvest season I am even more sure of two things that sustain us on our walk.
First we need Jesus. Have we his life changing us, his gift of life and love flowing through us? We were reminded by the Bishop of the privilege of knowing and serving him.
Secondly we don’t just need Jesus. As wonderful as Jesus is we need each other. The body of the church was his idea to help us through the valley, supporting and encouraging us on. How wonderful to hear our speakers share of other people who had helped them through the darkest times.

While I love the mountain top, I for one am so glad that faith grows best in the valley. It’s where I spend more time.

Ministry Opportunities

Two ministry opportunities will be opening up to anyone in our parishes who may feel that God is calling them to serve Him and others through helping to lead worhsip or through helping to provide enhanced pastoral care throughout our group of parishes.
LayreaderThe diocese will be starting a new Lay Reader training course at the beginning of 2012. This will begin with an initial six week course, after which participants will be able to serve as Parish Readers, assisting in services within our group of parishes. For those who wish, a further nine months training will result in them becoming Diocesan Readers, enabled to lead services and to preach throughout the diocese.
Counvelling headsWithin our own parishes we will also be providing basic training in counselling and pastoral skills for those who wish to help with the ever-growing pastoral needs of people in our area. Many individuals and families both inside and outside the church are facing challenging times at present and would benefit from being able to call on the help and support of individuals from the Church, in addition to receiving pastoral care offered from clergy.
If you feel that you would like to consider either (or both) of these ministry opportunities, please speak to Brendan or Richard.

House of Peace Orphanages, Salem, IndiaIndia

Dr JayThe orphan population in Asia and Africa is reaching crisis proportions due to AIDS, war, famine, and recent natural disasters. The 2005 UNICEF report on the orphan crisis in the world, “Children on the Brink 2005”, states that the orphan population in the world will grow significantly over the next ten years. India has a population well in excess of one billion people and has the largest orphan population in the world. The caste system and poverty leaves countless children without a future.
The House of Peace Orphanages were founded as part of the Indian Christian Mission Centre in 1988 by Dr. S. Jayaraj Krishnan, known as “Dr Jay” or "Pastor Jay". Raised as an orphan himself, Jay has devoted his life to the physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being of orphans in southern India. Growing from 12 orphans and widows in 1988 to over 1600 in 2008, ICMC has become one of the largest orphanages in India.
Jay was born in India in 1952, and raised in the Bethel orphanage in the Southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. On leaving high school he studied theology at the South Indian Seminary in Bangarapet, before working as a Pastor in Bombay, where he established 8 churches. In 1984 he went to the Philippines to obtain his Masters degree, and then Doctorate, before returning to South India to teach as a visiting professor of theology for four years in the rapidly developing city of Bangalore.
Jay was invited to become a pastor in Singapore and America, however, he returned to Tamil Nadu in 1988 in order to establish the Indian Christian Mission Centre in Salem. From being a hostel for 12 children it has grown into an organization with 3 orphanage centres as well as schools and third-level training colleges. ICMC currently employs over 300 staff members drawn from all sections of the local community.
S-K Group India visitJay is an inspirational figure and an engaging speaker, who has spoken throughout India as well as in many Western countries. He is past President of the Rotary Club of Salem, and now lives above the ICMC office with his wife, Christy and their three children, David, Neva and Bright.

Today, the House of Peace Orphanages are home to some 1200 children. In addition, a further 800 children are provided with day-care. It takes approximately 15 Euros or UK pounds per month to provide accommodation, food, clothing and education for a child in one of the orphanages.

The House of Peace Orphanages provide a safe, caring environment for children and are part of the Indian Christian Mission Centre (ICMC), a registered charity. ICMC accepts children and staff regardless of background or religion.

If you are interested in sponsoring a child please fill in the form which is available from the links below. gift moneyGift Day

Just to remind Templeport parishioners that October 16th is the annual gift day for St. Peter's. Giving money is one way of expressing what really matters to us. The Bible talks of God rejoicing in a cheerful giver - a response from the heart. Please give with joyful hearts as we ask each individual parishioner whether you have been giving for years, or perhaps never before, to prayerfully consider your special gift this year.

Some Things to Think About

  • A sharp tongue can cut my own throat.
  • If I want my dreams to come true, I mustn't oversleep.
  • Of all the things I wear, my expression is the most important.
  • The best vitamin for making friends - B1.
  • The happiness of my life depends on the quality of my thoughts.
  • The heaviest thing I can carry is a grudge.
  • One thing I can give and still keep... is my word.
  • I lie the loudest when I lie to myself.
  • If I lack the courage to start, I have already finished.
  • One thing I can't recycle is wasted time.
  • Ideas won't work unless ' I ' do.
  • My mind is like a parachute... it functions only when open.
  • The 10 commandments are not a multiple choice.
  • The pursuit of happiness is the chase of a lifetime! It is never too late to become what I might have been.
  • Life is too short to wake up with regrets. So love the people who treat you right... forget about the one's who don't. Believe everything happens for a reason. If you get a second chance, grab it with both hands. If it changes your life, let it. Nobody said life would be easy, they just promised it would be worth it.
