C of I Cross         The Church at work!         C of I Cross

He is not here!

Words which many of us can possibly identify with in our own lives – perhaps when we have called to see a friend, or rung to hasten someone regarding something which they have promised to do for us, or even in my own work when I have called at hospital to visit someone, we have heard those words He is not here! Imagine the whole range of emotions which we may have all felt at times upon hearing those words in some of the foregoing circumstances or others which you can perhaps identify with better. Perhaps amongst other things you have felt disappointed, let down, frustrated, disheartened, angry or even sad.

The Empty Tomb

Now put yourself in the position of Mary Magdalene and the other Mary (not the mother of Jesus) as they arrived at the tomb on that first Easter morning full of grief and sorrow at the crucifixion and death of our Lord. Two women who had risen early in the morning, as the new day was dawning, approached the tomb with their own burdens and expectations only to be told by an angel of the Lord He is not here! We can only speculate regarding their feelings at that moment but I believe that some of the emotions already mentioned above may have been flowing through their veins and could well have swept over them and overwhelmed them in that moment of hearing. Ultimately they left that scene with great joy in their hearts, why, because the stone had been rolled back, not to let Jesus out of the tomb, but to let the women in to see for themselves. The stone was rolled back and they were able to discover for themselves the discarded grave-clothes, the empty tomb and the truth behind the words He is not here! A truth which means that same discovery by men and women in the 21st century turns sadness and disillusionment into great joy. A truth which will continue to change the lives of countless people in years to come as they discover for themselves the glorious truth of the resurrection of our Lord. And a truth which we need to claim in each of our hearts if we are to profess with confidence and integrity a faith in Christ, who died for each one of us and rose in glorious triumph over death and sin.

This Easter, I want each one of us to reflect on our faith and as we do so I would encourage you to imagine that you are standing alongside Mary Magdalene and the other Mary as they heard the words He is not here! for the first time. Imagine that you are hearing those words for the first time and that you then enter the tomb and see the evidence for yourself and ringing in your ears are the words of the angel He is risen! The reaction of the women was quite simple go and tell. And as they did so their hearts were filled with great joy as they shared the news that The Lord had risen. For them it was a defining moment – a time when their faith took on a whole new dimension as their hearts were filled with the knowledge and truth of the Risen Lord. We also need to make that same discovery in our own lives, we need to share in the women’s sense of elation and great joy and then go and tell others about the discovery we have made, not as historical fact but as life-changing resurrection truth.

May we all experience that truth in our hearts this Easter and may it be a time of joy and peace for each one of us.

Forward!
Forward! is a four year initiative in our Diocese designed to grow healthier Parishes. It is not a criticism of what has gone before – indeed it is important for us both individually and collectively as a Church, to examine and consider where we have been, where we are now and where we feel God is calling us to in the future. That is in essence what Forward! is about – discerning God’s vision and heart for each of our Parishes and implementing a strategy, which is relevant to our own particular context, which ensures that vision becomes a reality! Each of us will have a part to play in this initiative if we are going to ensure that Forward! is a success, not for my sake but for the sake of Christ, the head of the Church.

We will be holding an information night to explain something more of what Forward! is about in Templeport Community Centre on Friday 8th April at 8.30pm. There will be entertainment on the night provided by Myrtle Woodhouse, a short presentation of Forward! followed by a bite of supper. Please do come along to this evening and find out how we can each be part of this exciting new initiative which seeks to move our Churches Forward! in the 21st Century.

100% attendance Sunday!
Sunday 17th April is the date of our next United Service in Tomregan Parish Church. As well being the day when we will receive and give thanks for responses to the Forward! initiative I felt that it would be entirely appropriate on our Forward! Sunday to have everyone in Church when we as a Church pledge to move forward in the strength of God’s Holy Spirit. Perhaps you are in Church every Sunday already, perhaps you come once in a while or perhaps it has been years since you last came. If when reading this you find yourself identifying with either of the last two categories of people, I would encourage you to make a special effort to come to Church this Sunday as we begin the Forward! initiative and give thanks to God for His unfailing Love and Faithfulness. Forward! is for each one of us, not just a select few, let us do this together and become a stronger Church, that is the body of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Diocesan Youth Service
This will take place in Billis Halls on Saturday 26th April at 8.30 pm. The speaker at this event will be the Archdeacon of Elphin & Ardagh, Andrew Forster. Andrew is a gifted communicator with a particular ministry to children and young people and he will be speaking on the theme From the Cross to the Grave, words taken from the worship song Lord I Lift Your Name on High. Music on the night will be provided by AGAPE, a group from a Church in the Cootehill area. Please do make a special effort to come along to this service with your children and young people as we seek to provide more for them in our Diocese. If anyone would like to go but needs transport then please contact the rectory by mid week in order that arrangements can be made.

Bereavements
This past month has seen the lives of a number of our parishioners in Tomregan Parish being touched by the loss of a loved one. Our sincere sympathies are extended to Mary Wallace on the very sudden death of her mother Sarah Marshall of Newtownbutler. We also feel at this time for William Ross on the loss of his sister Violet Robinson of Belfast. And Lily Johnston on the death of her aunt Hannah Gibson, formerly of Boley, Bawnboy who passed away in her 91st year in Shrewsbury, England. Bereavement is never an easy time but we do pray that Mary, William and Lily, and their families, would know God’s comfort in their time of loss.

Lenten and Holy Week Services
Our Lent services have been well attended thus far and it is good to share in fellowship with our neighbours in the Parish of Kinawley and Holy Trinity. Services will take place at 8.00 pm in the following pattern;

Monday 21st March Ballyconnell
Tuesday 22nd March Derrylin
Wednesday 23rd March Swanlinbar
Thursday 24th March Derrylin
Friday 25th March Ballyconnell

Easter Sunday Services
The Easter Sunday Services will take place within our own particular Parishes. During Holy Week our preacher will be Rev Canon Reggie Twaddell. Reggie is no stranger to most of us and we certainly look forward to hearing his series of sermons and pray that God would bless us through his ministry. I would encourage a good attendance at all services, even when they are not in our own particular Parish.

And some jokes to smile at

A teacher was having trouble teaching arithmetic to one little boy. So she said, “If you reached into your right pocket and found a twenty pence piece, and then you reached into your other pocket and found a fifty pence piece, what would you have?”

“Somebody else’s trousers”, replied the boy.

And not much gets past this father of a new-born child….
A father took some photographs of his new-born son to the chemist to have them developed. Unfortunately when he went to collect them, the assistant realised he had mislaid the snaps. He then found some of a baby and, showing them to the father, asked if it was his, “No, that’s not him”, replied the father. “Our wallpaper’s different”.

   Prayer points for March / April

Prayer matters in the life of a Christian. The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective (Jam 5: 16). Please pray for the following on the day of the week indicated;

Monday:     For a peaceful Easter and safety for all those who are travelling;
Tuesday:     For a real sense of the Resurrection Spirit amongst us as we prepare to move beyond Lent and into Easter;
Wednesday:     That the discipline which we have developed throughout the season of Lent is not something which is easily forgotten;
Thursday:    We pray for the elderly and house-bound in our group, that they would continue to know the presence of God through our actions and those of neighbours and friends;
Friday:     For our young people as they prepare for forthcoming examinations – that they might know God’s peace as they study;
Saturday:     For all those who have recently been bereaved or are sad at the memory of lost loved ones – that they would be comforted by the Lord;
Sunday:     For our group as we prepare to move Forward! through the Diocesan initiative – pray that there would be a good response throughout the group.
