First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is being reported all over the world. (Rom 1: 8 NIV)

I’m quite sure that you are familiar with the saying “Good news travels fast”. Long-awaited news of a birth or exam results, for example, are not long percolating through from one end of our Group of Parishes to the other – such are the advances of technology and our ability to beat the jungle drums with all of the latest news! And good news had reached the ears of Paul regarding the early Christians in Rome. Paul was in Corinth when he wrote this letter, hundreds of miles away from Rome. Imagine how different communication was in those days, no An Post or Royal Mail, no guaranteed next day delivery!! no mobile phones or e-mails (perhaps things weren’t so bad!!); no transcontinental news broadcasts via satellite – just plain simple word of mouth. And that word of mouth prompted Paul to give thanks, not for the level of giving or outreach or church attendances, but for the faith of the people. And Paul wrote these words of encouragement because faith really did matter to him, and it should matter to us today.
That is why we are running a faith development course entitled Christianity Explored over the course of the next few months. Please understand that when you read this that we will already have met for the first time but that the first session was really only an introduction to the course and you will be able to pick it up from week two onwards. Please understand that the course is for everyone, from every parish. Please understand that you will not be put on the spot or questioned, you will not be asked to pray or read or you will not be required to say anything you are not comfortable with. And please understand that we are running this course because faith really does matter and we want you to grow in your faith.
I wonder if Paul were to write to the Church in the Swanlinbar Group of Parishes what would he say about our faith?

Informal Praise Service

The first of these is going to take place on Sunday 12th November 2006 in Drumany. This is a completely new initiative in our Group of Parishes along with the parishioners of Derrylin Parish. The service is not designed to exclude any person, regardless of age or gender but it is anticipated that it will hold more appeal for the younger folk in our congregations. Please do come along and be open to an alternative, less formal way of worshipping God and bring your Mum or Dad, Granny or Granda with you!

Barn Brack Supper

Thank you to everyone who came along to the Parish Hall in Ballyconnell on Friday night 6th October. A good night’s crack was had by everyone as we danced to Kay and Nashville, although some of us may have stretched the definition of dancing somewhat! Thank you to everyone who worked behind the scenes and made the night possible. Around €1000 was raised for the Church Repair Fund.

Christianity Explored

This is a highly regarded course which helps people to examine the Christian faith in an informal setting. In essence it deals with 3 key questions;

  • Who was Jesus?
  • Why did he come?
  • What is involved in following him?

The course is for everyone, not just people who have not yet committed themselves to becoming a disciple of Jesus. It is not a prayer meeting or a bible study, but it is a means of finding out more about Jesus through looking at Mark’s Gospel over 10 weeks.
The following is the timetable of events;

Week
Date Subject
1
12th October Introduction to the course
2
19th October Jesus – who was He?
3
26th October Jesus – why did He come?
4
9th November Jesus – His death
5
16th November What is Grace?
6
23rd November Jesus – His Resurrection
Day away
25th November The Church, The Holy Spirit, Prayer, The Bible
7
4th January What is a Christian?
8
11th January Continuing as a Christian
9
18th January Choices – King Herod
10
25th January Choices – James, John & Bartimaeus.

Each meeting will begin at 8 pm with a cup of tea/coffee and informal chat, a presentation through a DVD and some discussion regarding what we have seen, heard and read each evening should end at 9.30 pm. This course will take place in our newly renovated room to the rear of the stage in Tomregan but it is for the whole of the Group. Beatrice Crawford from Kinawley has very kindly agreed to assist me with the delivery as facilitation of discussion is one of the key elements involved and I would be unable to do this on my own.

Bereavement

Our Sympathy is extended to the family of the late John Johnston of Ballyhugh. John was known to many of us, particularly as a cattle dealer of long standing. John died very suddenly and unexpectedly on the morning of Thursday 14th September. Our sincere sympathies are extended to his widow Eileen, her sons Ivor, Mervyn, David and Trevor and his sister Georgina.

   Prayer points for September and October

Let us continue to listen to God in prayer and develop a daily routine of praying for the following on the day of the week indicated;

Monday: For those who suffer dis-ease at this time, for whatever reason - that they would know the presence of God in their experience of wilderness ;
Tuesday: For all with responsibility for leadership in our church – that they would grow more and more in relationship with Jesus and lead more like Him ;
Wednesday: For all of our organisations as they resume after the summer recess – that they would bring joy into our relationships and build up our church family ;
Thursday: For Christianity Explored – that our faith and its development would be of primary importance in our Group of Parishes;
Friday: For our informal praise service – that it would meet a need and be a source of refreshment for those who are thirsting ;
Saturday: For all who are afflicted and suffer at this time – that they would embrace a fuller understanding of healing and know God’s peace in their lives ;
Sunday: For our Sunday afternoon kidz club – give thanks for the work of our leaders and pray that more leaders would volunteer for this important work .
