Then he returned to Bethany with the twelve disciples

Do you have a favourite place? Perhaps for you it is somewhere you went to as a child and it has since held fond memories. Or perhaps it is simply somewhere you like to go to think about things when the walls begin to close in on you! From my reading of Scripture, Jesus’ had a favourite place and that place was Bethany. It was somewhere he went to at the beginning of the week leading up to his crucifixion – So Jesus came to Jerusalem and went into the Temple. After looking around carefully at everything, he left because it was late in the afternoon. Then he returned to Bethany with the twelve disciples ( Mk 11: 11). It was somewhere he went to throughout that week, and at other times in his earthly ministry. But what was so special about Bethany? Well to understand that we would need to really examine what he did there and who he did it with. First, Bethany was where his friend Lazarus came from. Second, Bethany was a place where it was recorded that Jesus ate at the home of Simon the Leper. And last, at Bethany, Jesus was honoured by the woman who poured expensive perfume over his head from an alabaster jar. In short, Jesus experienced friendship, hospitality and blessing at Bethany. He went there on a number of occasions because it was somewhere he could retreat to and experience rest and quiet. It was a place where he could go and be among friends and not be concerned about the demands of everyday life.
We each have massive demands in our lives too and at times it seems that they never cease. We all need a Bethany in our lives – somewhere we can retreat to escape those ever-increasing demands. Some of us may be able to escape for a few weeks, for others it will be only a few days or even hours. But wherever it is you go to escape, and for however long, may you experience friendship, hospitality and blessing during these summer months and be refreshed by the One who promises to take on all our burdens.

Mr & Mrs

I’m quite sure that the older members of our group will remember the quiz show Mr & Mrs with the question master Derek Batey. Well, we will be having our very own version of Mr & Mrs on Friday 8th September at 9pm in the Community Centre, Templeport. Our compere for the evening is no stranger to many of us, Archdeacon Andrew Forster from Elphin & Ardagh. The couples who will be showing how much, or indeed how little, they know about one another are Naomi & myself, Bishop Ken Clarke and Mrs Helen Clarke, Councillor Peter Mcvitty and Mrs Susan McVitty and Councillor Sean Smith and Mrs Anne Smith. This should prove to be a great night’s crack with music and drama on the theme of love and marriage as well as supper. I’ve enclosed a flyer with information regarding the evening for you to give to a friend or neighbour so that we might fill the hall on the night and all of the proceeds will be divided equally between group funds and Bawnboy Playground Fund. No tickets are available, simply come early and pay at the door (£7 / €10).

Wedding bells in Tomregan

We’ve had the first of our two weddings in Tomregan this year with the marriage of Ken Higgins to Sandra Kells of Brackley. Sandra & Ken were married at 1.30m on Saturday 8th July 2006 by myself, assisted by Ken’s minister, Revd Eric Russell form Kells, Co Meath. In my talk I reminded the congregation and the happy couple that not everyone chooses to marry in contemporary culture. Many share the view of a six year old who when asked what the ideal age to marry was replied; No age is ideal, you would need to be mad to get married!! Let us support this young couple as they begin this new chapter in their lives and have been united in a bond till death us do part. The service was followed by a wonderful meal in the Slieve Russell Hotel.
Sadly, we will be losing Sandra from our group as Ken and her will be living in Cavan town, but we all wish you every blessing and encouragement in your lives together and you are always most welcome to come back at any time!!

Congratulations!

To two recently qualified Primary School teachers. Avril Graham (Kinawley) and Linda Kells (Templeport) have recently been successful in their respective studies through Stranmillis College and The Church of Ireland College of Education respectively. Linda has just been successful in her appointment to a full-time teaching position in Skerries National School, Co Dublin and will continue to study for her honours degree through Trinity College Dublin. Avril will be looking for a teaching position, something which is in short supply in the North of Ireland at the present. Very well done to both of you and every success girls in the future in your chosen careers.

Sunday club

George Davison, myself and a small group have been planning a Sunday afternoon club for a number of months now and this will begin on Sunday 3rd September at 3.30 pm (finishing at 5 pm) in Derrylin Parish Hall. We intend to make this a monthly event on the first Sunday and it is open to all children in our group and beyond. It would be great if we could encourage children from neighbouring parishes to come along and be part of this new initiative. The afternoon should run along the same lines as the Pyramid Rock bible club ie some music, games, teaching, craft and singing – sounds so good I wish I was a child myself! If you would be interested in helping out at this club then please do contact me and we will find something for everyone to do.

Diocesan Review

You may have heard some horror stories about this and I would encourage you not to listen to the gossip and try not to be too alarmed. Change in our Diocese is inevitable, but the changes which have been proposed at this stage are only that, PROPOSALS! Please do not get entwined in the rumour mongering which will inevitably go on, but what you can do is pray for those who will make decisions regarding the best way forward for our Diocese.

Sunday School Prize Giving

Thanks are extended to our Sunday School teachers for all of their work throughout the year. Sunday School will resume on Sunday 3rd September. Don’t forget about the Sunday club later that day at 3.30pm in Derrylin Parish Hall!

Street Reach

Gail Lovett and two other young people from Kilmore Diocese were involved in a Church of Ireland initiative called Street Reach. Street Reach seeks to reach people with the love of God in practical ways, people who perhaps have not been shown much love in their lives previously. Gail tells me that through her voluntary actions, many people asked her why she should want to help them and not get paid for doing so - what a wonderful opportunity to tell people about Jesus!! This is Gail's story......

On Tuesday 4th of July I travelled with two friends to the Kings Hall in Belfast to take part in the 5 day Streetreach 2006. The team we were with worked in the Beersbridge area. The work included painting fences, making flower boxes, picking up street litter and cleaning up a small river. We organised a fun day, a BBQ and a car wash. Each night we went to meetings where we prayed and sang worship songs led by a live band.
The whole experience was rewarding and very worthwhile and we made many new friends. We have already planned to return next year!

Wouldn't it be great if more of us could serve others in this way and so show God's incredible love in ways which really do reach people.

Wouldn't it be great . . . . . ?

Pyramid Rock

As you can see from our photographs, our children had an absolute ball at Pyramid Rock, our holiday bible club in Derrylin Parish Hall. As the title suggests, the club was based on Joseph and his life and the children learnt that God has a plan for our lives, is there to help us always, provides for our needs, is forgiving and needs to be King of our hearts and lives. Each day, the children were encouraged to share how God had been speaking to them through the previous day’s activity and learning. It really was a brilliant week and it was so encouraging for the leaders to read the following comment from a child on the last day;
I’m sad because this is the last day of Pyramid Rock!
Praise God for encouragement like this – I don’t hear this after many Sunday services!!
Thank you to everyone who made this club possible and to parents for bringing their children along.
