Next week - A Special Visitor!

Church of Ireland Cross
Berly BakerEarlier today I was delighted to finally book flights for Beryl Baker to come and visit us. Beryl is of course the nurse who has spent over 30 years working in the Chaco in Paraguay with the South American Missionary Society.
Bishop KenBeryl is presently in England for her first visit home in seven years. God has been so good in allowing Beryl to be home at a difficult family time as her brother has not been at all well and his long term care is having to be worked out. God willing, assuming there are no significant family changes Beryl will be visiting us next weekend. She will be arriving Friday 27th July, leaving on the Monday. Beryl will therefore be around for the united service on July 29th and will be able to see our Bishop who will of course shortly be leaving us for SAMS. Following the service Bishop Ken will formally open the newly refurbished Tomregan hall
When I visited Beryl in Paraguay last year she shared with me her hope that one day she would be able to visit us in person. It is wonderful that just 12 months later this hope may be answered.
Our Parish group has been supporting Beryl for over three years now in prayer and financial giving and your generous support has been a wonderful step in tune with precious values we find in the earliest mission of the church. Our churches are not called to be living in isolation we are called to discover ways of partnership.
Richard's signatureCaptain Richard Beadle
The Apostle Paul was one who believed greatly in the importance of partnership – in fact I think he would have declared that the mission of the church depended upon it! In his letter to the Philippians, St Paul wrote to the church in Phillipi, “I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus”. Let’s keep partnering!

A Grand Day Out!

Ulster Folk ParkSwanlinbar Parish's coach trip to the Ulster Folk and Transport museum proved to be a great day. Even the weather was dry and pleasant though raining back here! While a few shopped in Bangor most folk went exploring the museum and the Titanic exhibition. A major point of interest of course proved to be the Harry Ferguson Tractors exhibited in action on the fields. The men were all very interested in watching the now very humble little Ferguson tractors working and displaying how things used to be done. The day concluded with a sumptuous meal in the Viscount Restaurant, Dungannon. Our sincere thanks to Steven and Jenny Crawford who organised such a successful outing.
Ulster Folk ParkMany thanks also to everyone who supported the day including parishioners from other neighbouring parishes and parishes within our group.

Summer MadnessSummer Madness

It was great to see four of our young people travel with the diocesan youth group to this year’s Summer Madness festival. This was held on the Glenarm Estate outside Larne on the north coast. They joined two thousand two hundred young people and leaders camping over four days of fun with wonderful opportunities to make friends and discover more of God’s love. I would like to thank the leaders who have helped with diocesan trips to Summer Madness over a few years. Their experience and expertise showed!

Summer MadnessThe Summer Madness festival has now been running 26 years and has touched the lives of thousands of young people. I would really encourage us to see if a larger group could go from our group next year. If we are serious in our desire to see our young people growing in their life of faith and in the family of our churches we have to make the most of these wonderful and God blessed events.

Mothers Union logoUse Your Gifts!

Mothers Union Diocesan FestivalMothers Union members attended the Diocesan Festival Service in Billis Church. The special speaker was Mrs Patsy Devoy, Faith and Policy Unit who spoke on the theme of MU for this year, Your Gift - Discover and Celebrate. She challenged everyone to find their own particular gift, very different for each individual member, and to use it for God's glory. Tea was served afterwards in the local Community Centre at which a cake was cut to celebrate the 125th anniversary of Mothers' Union in Ireland.
The Senior members tea party was held in Kilmore Hall and was attended by over 50 members. Bishop Ken Clarke conducted a service of Holy Communion and gave a short address to members and friends. The Diocesan President, Joy Little and the Bishop then circulated among the members during the tea and many friendships were renewed.

We are very thankful for the International Fund for Ireland for their assistance as part of the Rural development Programme, for enabling this to happen. Special opening events are being planned for the Autumn.

Bereavement

William Edgeworth

We remember William Edgeworth, a former member of Tomregan Parish. We especially remember Willie’s family at this difficult time.

Heavenly Father, give us faith and light in times of darkness. May our trusting in you help us live with questions unanswered. Grant us a certain hope in You, that will grow to surpass immeasurably the greatest depths of despair felt now. In you our Lord we put our trust.

Templeport Thank You!

Madeline and Rhynn Hewson

May we take this opportunity to thank everyone who supported the special thanksgiving service in memory of Rhynn and Madeline Hewson. Both Rhynn and Madeline were very active and generous supporters of Templeport Parish and the wider community.

We thank the Hewson family for their very generous gifts of a complete set of Communion linen, also green and red Communion table frontals and pulpit and lectern falls. These gifts greatly enhance our Church.

Templeport Vestry also marked this special day with the gift of a stone seat in the graveyard in memory and thanksgiving for the lives of Ryhnn and Madeline.

SmileTime for a Smile!

The pensioner went to the doctor with a pain in her left leg. “It’s terribly sore, doctor” she explained to him, “It even keeps me awake at night. The doctor examined her carefully then shook his head sadly. “I’m sorry Maggie” he said, “but there isn’t anything I can do, it’s just old age”
“It can’t be that” she retorted firmly, “the other leg is the same age but it isn’t sore”

A policeman was standing outside the village post office one day when an elderly lady asked him to help her to cross the road as traffic was heavy. He smiled at her and said “There’s a zebra crossing just a little way further on.”. “Oh Well” retorted the pensioner, “I hope he has better luck than me!”

A mother told her young daughter that if she didn’t eat her carrots she wouldn’t see in the dark. “That’s alright mum” the six year old replied, “That’s what light bulbs are for!”

Teacher: “Why are you doing your multiplication sums on the floor?”
Little Jimmy promptly replied “Because teacher you told us we must not use tables.”

Church of Ireland Cross   Prayer Points for July and August  Church of Ireland Cross

Let us continue to listen to God in prayer and develop a daily routine of praying for the following on the day of the week indicated;
In our year of mission let us pray on each day for one another.

Sunday: We pray for hearts wholly committed to our Saviour Jesus. That we would grow to love him “above all things”;
Monday: We pray for our young people that they would grow as disciples of Christ. May they grow to follow him. We pray for young people preparing for confirmation;
Tuesday: We pray for our diocese in the midst of some key changes of clergy. In particular we pray for Bishop Ken in his last months with us and the neighbouring Belturbet group as Rev Steve Clark leaves;
Wednesday:

We pray for the farming communities in which we live. We pray for safety and for a good harvest despite the difficulties of the weather;

Thursday: We pray for those we know who are unwell in body, mind and spirit, especially remembering those who are fearful. We ask for the compassion of Jesus to bring hope, life and freedom;
Friday: We pray for events planned to help grow a sense of family in our parishes among all ages;
Saturday: We pray for our missionary links overseas. We pray for Beryl Baker as she spends precious time with her family before returning to Paraguay.
