Thank God for Easter!

Church of Ireland Cross
It’s 9pm on Easter day and I am trying to put into words something of the last few days. There is tiredness and wonder.
In one sense Holy week was simple this year. Yes we had lots going on but only to allow time and space simply to allow the Gospels to speak for themselves seeking to follow the passion in as near real time as we could.
The only sermon that we heard was a powerful thought from Brendan to contemplate – What if Easter never happened? We’d have never even have heard of Jesus, let alone know his message of hope, purpose, forgiveness and eternal life!
Throughout our passion journey there has been wonderful practical help and hospitality and I want to acknowledge that and say thank you first of all.
There were many precious moments but here are just a few brushstrokes that may help give a sense of our time together.
Jesus carrying the cross & the empy tomb
  • It started with our Passover meal with nearly 50 in attendance. We tasted lamb and bitter herbs as we remembered God’s rescue plan with the Jews and his even greater rescue through Jesus.
  • It has been thrilling to see the way that so many parishioners have made real effort to get to the bits that they could and yes to hear their frustration when they couldn’t. There has been a genuine sense of missing out!
  • The children who came gave so many precious insights and thoughts as well as their joyful presence. For example children playing noughts and crosses at the cross in Kildallon and we suddenly realising that was what the Roman soldiers had been doing in the reading we had just had!
  • Near 30 people singing past 1am in the garden at Corrawallen, “I need thee every hour.”
  • Warming ourselves round a fire at Templeport as we thought about Peter past 3am!
  • A full moon and a beautiful night, despite all the talk of snow and stuff earlier in the week.
  • Getting a sense of Pilate’s frustration with having Jesus thrust before him as we moved from place to place in Swanlinbar.
  • I wondered how we would manage over 7 hours in Kildallon on Good Friday yet they were so special and such a powerful reminder of Christ’s sacrifice.
  • A service in Kinawley that remembered the burial in the tomb – a short moment to remind us of a body committed to the ground.
  • The joy of the dawn Easter day with around 60 people on the hill including a number for the first time. Even the sun made a brief appearance and the speed the children ran down was a powerful reminder of the haste the women would have run to the disciples – Jesus is alive!
Richard's signatureCaptain Richard Beadle

It has been wonderful to have time and make time to dwell richly on all that Christ has done for us.
Easter has been full of moments of real blessing. Lives have been touched and we give thanks to God. Brendan asked, ‘What if Easter had never happened?” We praise God it did!
May I take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy Easter Celebration

Vestry meetingEaster Vestries – The Future of Our Parish

We are looking forward to our Easter vestries this year as they will help us look forward in a really significant way. Building on discussions with parishioners in our Lent meetings, these Easter vestry Meetings are open to all parishioners. They will play a key part in helping each individual parish look at their future development and growth. If you have an interest in how your parish looks to the future in what it does come along!

Date Parish Location
Monday 16th April Tomregan Tomregan church
Thursday 19th April Kildallon Kildallon Church
Monday 23rd April Templeport St Peter’s Church
Monday 30th April Swanlinbar Swanlinbar old school
Thursday 3rd May Newtowngore Newtowngore Church

We have been very encouraged by many of the conversations we have had so far with some wonderful thoughts and ideas. For example, Tomregan has looked at children from Ballyconnell School having the opportunity of helping in services once a month, with a children’s Sunday Club on other Sundays. The Sunday Club will also help with a family service each month. Suggestions from other parishes have included ideas as diverse as a flower festival, a parish celebration meal and starting a choir.

We would also like each church to develop their own symbol and some ideas have been shared in some of Brendan’s sermons. For example St. Peter’s Templeport is by a lake so might have a net, a boat or a fish as a symbol. Meetings will be at 8.30pm with the exception of Tomregan which will start at 9pm. Our ‘parish future’ discussions will take place before the vestry business if anyone needs to leave early.

Cross community Lent in Kinawley

Over 5 weeks in Lent a few parishioners from Kinawley and Swanlinbar have been meeting with our Catholic neighbours on a Saturday morning for a very precious hour in Kinawley Enterprise Centre.

The meeting together has been well supported by both communities with around 40 in attendance at our last meeting. The atmosphere has been brilliant. As one of our Catholic neighbours shared, “this just feels right.” It has been a joy to be a part of.

Together using a banner we have explored through song, word and prayer the theme of following Jesus. Conscious of history in Kinawley this has been a small but important step in building relationships with our neighbours that we praise God for.

Fiona Castle“Simply Living, Living Simply”

Mothers’ Union are looking forward to hosting two evenings in the Diocese at which the speaker will be Fiona Castle, wife of the late Roy Castle who was a popular entertainer.
Fiona was born in the Wirral in 1940 and at the age of nine went to a boarding school in Surrey. She married Roy Castle in 1963, with whom she had four children and they were married for 31 years. Looking back over 50 years, Fiona shares fascinating insights about her life and experiences, including her days as a professional ballet dancer and theatre performer working with Harry Secombe and Eric Morecambe among other famous stars. Following the loss of her beloved husband to lung cancer in 1994, Fiona has been active in campaigning and writing and enjoys keeping fit.
Living Simply - Simply LivingShe travels the country speaking about her Christian faith, encouraging women to take God's love into the community in a practical and relational way; she tells how she came to invite Jesus into her life and the transformation that He brought about in her. Fiona explains throughout the evening how her faith in God has made all the difference - granting her peace even in the midst of the storm.
Roy CastleShe will speak on the subject entitled 'Simply Living, Living Simply'. Drawing from her book of the same name, Fiona urges her listeners to ‘declutter’ their lives and concentrate on the things that really matter - people and relationships.
Fiona is a wise and engaging speaker and her talks are peppered with anecdotes and lessons learned from personal experiences from which we can all learn something, so do make an effort to come and hear her speak at the following venues:
The Bush Hotel, Carrick-on-Shannon on Tuesday 24th April at 8pm.
Cavan Crystal Hotel, Dublin Rd., Cavan on Wednesday 25th April at 8pm
Admission including refreshments - €7.

We would like to offer our sympathy and prayers to Wilson Crawford and sister Marion following the death of their brother Cecil following a difficult period of illness.

Heavenly Father, give us faith and light in times of darkness. May our trusting in you help us live with questions unanswered. Grant us a certain hope in You, that will grow to surpass immeasurably the greatest depths of despair felt now. In you our Lord we put our trust.

Beryl BakerSAMS United Service 29th April & News from Beryl

On the last Sunday in April we will have a united group service in Kildallon. Our guest speakers that day will be Geoff Hamilton and Claire Holmes from SAMS as we celebrate our link with Beryl Baker. It will be a service for all ages so please come along to be blessed and be a blessing.
We also understand that Beryl has been asked to help find a new buyer for the ranch where she lives.

Beryl recently wrote:
This afternoon I spoke to Rhett (the ranch owner) on the telephone as he came out of hospital today and he can continue his treatment at home with a weekly check up. He has a tube in his stomach through which liquid food is passed - a much better and more comfortable way than having tubes in his nose. He has been told that he is likely to be with this system for 2 or 3 months during which time his swallowing ability should return - so that is a big item for prayer but much more important is that he will commit his life 100% to the Lord Jesus
The steering failed on the truck on Thursday and it is now in the workshop and so I will have to stay in town until I get it back.
My PDF reader refuses to work also Skype and I've been told that this is because of a virus the computer has. As soon as I can I will get the technician to put things right
It is still very, very hot and everyone is wilting as the heat has gone on for so long, now.
The World Land Trust is a British organisation set up by Sir David Attenborough and they buy land and forests that have not been destroyed in order to save the wild animals, birds etc but also to do their part in preventing more global warming. They are interested in Indians and the local people wherever they go and work alongside national organisations with the same goals in mind. They are very interested in the Paraguayan Chaco and already have two properties in Paraguay. La Roche - Christians in Conservation would be my first choice but their funds would not stretch by any means to buy Rhett’s ranch. Selling to another rancher would not work as the 80% untouched forest would be destroyed for more grazing and money making.

love and prayers,
Beryl.

Work is continuing on the hall and it is great to see the work progressing well. We are hopeful that the contractors part of the works will be finished in the very near future. Electrical installations and plumbing are presently in progress. Tomregan HallTomregan Hall
Regrettably the BBQ in aid of Tomregan Hall Repair Fund originally scheduled for 16th June has had to be cancelled because the Masonic Hall are having a BBQ on the same day in Ballinamore. A date is now being looked for, it is expected that a suitable one will be found in the summer.
Compare the photos on the right, the one of the old building taken in June 2004 with mural and the one as it is now, you may also notice the chimneys have gone.

As you can see from the pictures work on the extension is progressing well thanks in part to the fine weather we have had. Even better news is that we have received approval verbally for the Leitrim Leader Grant that will enable phase 2 of the works. This will allow the builder to extend the hall out slightly. May I add our thanks to those who worked so hard to secure this application and to the International Fund for Ireland for their assistance as part of the Rural Development Programme for the present work. .

SmileTime for a Smile!

Well, if it's that obvious to a child...
A man had a habit of grumbling at the food his wife placed before him at family meals. Then he would ask the blessing.
One day after his usual combination complaint-prayer, his little girl asked, "Daddy, does God hear us when we pray?"
Family eating"Why, of course," he replied. "He hears us every time we pray."
She pauses on this a moment, and asked, "Does he hear everything we say the rest of the time?"
"Yes, dear, every word," he replied, encouraged that he had inspired his daughter to be curious about spiritual matters.
However, his pride was quickly turned to humility...
"Then which does God believe?"

Art in heaven

From a 3-year-old:
"Our Father, Who does art in heaven, Harold is His name.
Amen."
