Church of Ireland  Cross

Have you ever lost or misplaced anything and have not been able to find it? I know I have. Very recently I knew that I had left €65 somewhere around the house, but could I find it!!
I searched and searched with no success – Naomi helped me in this search as she asked me those really annoying questions like “Have you checked your…..” or “When did you last see it”.
I became increasingly frustrated in my search but I became all the more determined to find the missing money as time went by. Eventually, I did find it in the pocket of a suit I had worn just a couple of days previously – imagine my joy (and Naomi’s comments!!) as I found what had been lost, I was so relieved as I thought that the money was lost forever.
This little parable of my experience tells us something very significant about the attitude of Jesus towards us. Recently we thought about the heart of Jesus and his mission in the world as we looked at the parable of the Lost Sheep. Following on from this, Jesus tells another parable with a similar meaning but with a different illustration. Jesus tells a story about a woman who has 10 silver coins and loses one of them (Luke 15: 8-10). It is not difficult for us to place value upon the missing coin – the world we live in gives it great value. The story goes that she searched and searched using all means available to her (light and a brush) until she finds the missing coin. The point Jesus is making in telling the story is that we are like that lost coin – we have real value in God’s sight. It is because of that value in His eyes that he searches and searches for us, even sending His one and only Son to die for us so that we might be found in God through Him. I wonder how many of us actually feel that value and worth which God places upon our lives.
This truth is what we read of in the Bible….but many still believe the lies of the devil as he seeks to undermine our confidence in Jesus with the lies of this world. Lies that convince young girls that unless you wear a size 6 dress, you are not beautiful. Lies that convince young men that unless they behave like “Jack the lad” then they are not “COOL”!
Such lies lead to emptiness and loneliness, alienation and separation. But the truth leads to joy and fulfilment as we know and understand our true worth in God’s eyes. May we each grow in the knowledge of that truth and reject the seductive lies which surround us in our world.

Can’t cook, won’t cook Chef carrying big bowl of food
This should be a night to be remembered! Our victims, or should I say participants are Dean Raymond Ferguson and Geoff. The demonstration will be provided by Flo Creighton, no stranger to many of us and the whole evening will be facilitated by Mr Gary Wilson from Kesh (the man who referred to our beautiful Community Centre as a converted hen house!!). Everything kicks off at 8pm on Friday 2nd November in the community centre at Templeport. The evening will include a supper and there will also be a bit of comedy from Johnny and Mary (remember them from Mr & Mrs) as Johnny prepares a special meal for his lovely bride! Tickets are priced at £6.50/€10 (contact Geoff for more details) and all proceeds are going towards Forward initiatives within our Group of Parishes e.g. Senior Citizens Christmas Dinner etc.

Harvest project

Our Harvest services are over for this year and it was a truly joyous occasion all round. I would like to thank;
    • everyone who came along and supported these services;
    • everyone who took part in the services “up front” so to speak;
    • those who provided fruit and vegetables etc to decorate our churches and those did the decorating;
    • those who gave so generously towards our Harvest project through Christian Aid – over €3000 was raised (including sterling) for the relief of flood victims in Asia.

Harvest supper and concert

What a night we all had in Kildallon Community Centre!! Well over 200 people crowded into the hall for a night of entertainment, fellowship and food which will be long remembered in our Group. I know that many people really did not completely understand what the night would “look like” but I hope that this now gives us a great platform to build on for future years – someone came to me on the night bursting with ideas and energy regarding what might be done next year (Praise God for that!). Everyone who took part is worthy of sincere thanks and praise for providing such a varied and uplifting evening, from the youngest child to the oldest adult, your contribution was very much appreciated. And sincere thanks to the ladies who really did provide a wonderful supper for us all – a reminder of God’s goodness and faithfulness to provide for us as long as the earth endures. And thanks to the committee of the Community Centre for the use of a wonderful facility – something which I hope we will be using for similar events in the years to come.

Group Youth Fellowship

We got off to a great start way back in September – seems such a long time ago already!! Youth Fellowship resumes this evening (Sunday 21st Oct) from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. Youth Fellowship is for all teenagers, regardless of whether they belong to our Group of Parishes or not, so if you are coming along bring a friend from another Parish or from the wider community. We want to see our young people becoming mature in the faith and growing in their knowledge of who they are in Christ – you can be part of that process by helping to equip the room where we meet. We need soft, comfortable furnishings to make the Minor Hall a comfortable place for our teenagers to “chill out” – so if you are changing a suite of furniture in the near future and your old suite is manufactured with fire-retardant material, we would love to take your old one off your hands!! Please let Geoff know if you would like to donate some soft furnishings.

BereavementCross

We all lost a dear friend when Edna Morton died very suddenly in the early hours of Sunday 30th September. Only a few hours earlier Edna, as was typical of her in life, was supporting the Group and enjoying the craic at our Harvest Supper and Concert. Edna will be sorely missed in Tomregan Parish by all the parishioners, in the community by her friends and in the home by those closest to her. We think especially of the family in their grief – we pray that Kenneth and Caroline and the whole family circle would be comforted by God in his love and compassion and would lean on Him as a source of strength with which to face the days ahead.

Confirmation Laying on of hands
Bishop Ken has verified that there will be a service of confirmation at 3.30pm on Sunday 27th April 2008. So far I am aware of only 4 candidates, all from Swanlinbar Parish, so this service will take place in St. Augustine's Parish Church, Swanlinbar. There will be a meeting for all parents and candidates early in the New Year to discuss the preparation and what is involved in confirmation – attendance at our Group Youth Fellowship is considered to be part of that preparation.

Parenting Course Family
Please don’t forget about this practical course, commencing on Tuesday 23rd Oct 2007, in the Minor Hall, Ballyconnell. The course will be under the auspices of the MU, facilitated by Ann Howard, but is absolutely open to non-members and indeed people who are not members of the Church of Ireland – we simply want to help parents to deal with the challenges they face today.
The course runs over 4 weeks (23rd Oct, 30th Oct, 6th Nov and 13th Nov all at 8pm) and there is no charge for it although people would be encouraged to make a voluntary donation towards the travel expenses of the facilitator.
If you are interested in attending then please let Geoff know – to date we have 10 interested parents. Please do come and encourage your friend or neighbour to come along as well.

Update on work in Parishes

Templeport – the floor is now complete, with a few minor adjustments to be made to the fixing of the choir stalls and I think that all would agree it is a beautiful job. The new toilet and boiler house for the oil-fired central heating system is now built but is still to be plastered, installation of the radiators under the pews is to begin next week
God willing, all work should be complete for our Advent Carol service in December – imagine that, you will be able to leave your top coat outside in the porch!!

Ballyconnell – the floor has now been laid, yet to be sanded and varnished, but there is still much to do! Progress has been slow but sure but it is only fair to say that works completed are very pleasing indeed. Like Templeport, we hope to have all works completed for our Advent Carol service in December.

Kildallon – the work to the Rectory should be commencing in around 3 weeks time. It is hoped that a contractor will be appointed to do this work at the next meeting of our Select Vestry for Kildallon, Newtowngore & Corrawallen at 8 pm on Monday 22nd October 2007 in the Sunday School room, Kildallon.

And finally, Swanlinbar Parish are continuing to refurbish the Old School House, opposite the Rectory and it is hoped that a suspended ceiling will be installed in the next week or so.

I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to these projects, whether manually, financially or otherwise – your support is very much appreciated.

Kidz Club

Kidz Club returns to Ballyconnell after a lengthy break and will resume on Sunday 4th November from 3.30pm to 5pm in Ballyconnell Hall. Kidz Club is a collaborative work between our new grouping and Derrylin Parish – but only a couple of children from our group come along to it! I would really encourage parents to bring their children along (aged 4-12) for a fun time when we can do something very substantial with the children which cannot be done in a church vestry!! Would leaders of Kidz Club please note that there will be a planning meeting for this club at 7.30 pm on Monday 22nd Oct in Derrylin Rectory.

"Hi, this is George. I'm sorry I can't answer the phone right now. Leave a message, and then wait by your phone until I call you back.".

"Please leave a message. However, you have the right to remain silent. Everything you say will be recorded and will be used by us."

"Hi. Now you say something."
